Keyword Analysis Easy Step by Step Guide

In order to succeed in search engine optimisation (SEO) , you must actively work to create and publish content on your site. But how can you really choose to choose the right keywords? In this article we will give you the answer!

What is a keyword analysis? 

Whether you’re working with search engine optimisation or planning to buy SEO , you’ve probably come across the term “keyword analysis.” But what is a keyword analysis really and why do you use it?

To briefly explain what this type of analysis is about, it’s finding potential keywords / keywords that you can target to improve their visibility on Google and other search engines.

Usually, you want to find potential keywords that are related to their product or service. For example, at “SEO Expert Melbourne”, we have conducted a keyword analysis to identify keywords related to our services – SEO , Web and Digital Advertising . Words we then write texts into our knowledge bank. Just like the text you are reading now!

Similarly, when we work with our customers, we begin by identifying interesting words that we can make them appear on and thereby increase traffic to their website, which in turn leads to increased revenue.

Importance of finding the right word

To identify these keywords, we use different tools and methods, which we will tell you later on in this article. However, it is not enough to identify words related to their product / service, but it is important to find the right keywords.

All SEOs are most likely to have their own opinion about what characterizes “right” keywords, but personally, I think they have the following components:

  • Related to its product / service
  • As many searches as possible
  • As low organic competition as possible

So why is it so important to find the right keywords? Is it not enough to focus on the words you come across? Do you have to make everything so complicated?

 

In order to make it as easy and educational as possible, I thought that we would like to erase everything by point:

  • Words related to their product / service – As you certainly understand, it is very important to look at words related to your product / service. On the other hand, if you only feel in love and just guess what people are looking for when looking for those you offer them, you risk losing many other words with great potential.
  • As many searches as possible – Whether your goal with SEO is to increase your revenue or work with brand building, you definitely need to look at words with as many people as possible looking for.
  • As low organic competition as possible – sometimes, it does not matter how relevant the word is to your product / service and how many searches it has. If the organic competition on the specific word is too tough, you will never be able to see it anyway!

To sum it up, a keyword analysis is about finding keywords that make it as time and cost-effective as possible to achieve your search engine optimisation goals !

Do a keyword analysis 

Now that you have a better understanding of why this type of analysis is so important, I thought to show you how to actually do a keyword analysis on your own.

Step 1 – Identify interesting keywords  

The first step in the analysis is to find words that are related to your product / service. At this stage, it is more about quantity than quality . To do this there are a variety of tools and methods, but the ones I will show are as follows:

  • Related searches in Google
  • Google Keyword Planner
  • Google Trends
  • Analysis of competitors
  • Use data from your site

Related searches in Google

If you are a beginner in the area or want to make a simpler analysis, you can start by checking the related searches in Google. Start by simply doing a search on your product / service:

Then scroll down the bottom of the page and see what other searches are made related to this:

Google Keyword Planner 

Another great tip is to use you out of Google Keyword Planner , which is a free tool available to you who advertise through Google Adwords  (future Google Ads ). After digging the Keyword Planner, select “Search for new keywords using a phrase, website, or category”:

Then type in the product / service you provide and then tap “download suggestion”:

Then you will get a long list of words that are related to those you provide to your customers:

Google Trends 

Another great tool from Google is Trends , in which you have the ability to find popular search phrases and related queries to a specific word or topic:

Analysis of competitors

To find interesting words, you also have the opportunity to analyze which keywords your competitors are already seeing at the present time. To do this, you can use a variety of tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush .

Start by listing all your competitors, then enter SEMrush and choose “Organic Research” from the menu on the left:

Then type their domain name into the search box and you will then have access to their most traffic-driven keywords:

Use data from your site 

Last but not least, you can use data from your own website to find interesting keywords. Simply log in to Google Analytics, then select Behavior> Site Search> Search Terms in the left menu:

You will then have access to search terms that people used on your site (provided you have a search box).

Step 2 – Find out the number of searches & organic competition 

Once you’ve found interesting keywords related to your product / service, it’s time to find out how many searches are done on the respective keywords, as well as how organic competition looks.

Even for this, there are countless SEO tools to use, but in this example we will use Keyword Revealer . End the tool and then type in the keyword (s) you want to analyze:

Then click on “Evaluate”

Then you can see the organic competition on the specific keyword (s):
