Chapter 1: Appearing on Google for free
You can expose your business on Google for free or through different payment models. In this chapter we will review the methods you can use to be seen for free.
Google My Business
If you’ve read our local SEO guide, you’re probably familiar with Google My Business (GMB). Google My Business is one of the best and easiest ways to appear on the first page of search results. In short, you can describe GMB as a location tool that lets you see Google free of charge for relevant and local searches:
“How do I become visible on Google using Google My Business?” Maybe you’re thinking now. Then you will probably also be happy when I say it’s incredibly easy. You can easily go to google.com/business , press “Start Now” and then follow the instructions.
But how does Google decide who really should show up in search results through GMB? There are two things that the local tool looks a little extra:
- The name of the company
- The address of your company
Below is an explanation:
The name
We’ve helped a customer delivering fruit baskets to businesses with Google’s eyesight and they had a question as to why their industry colleague constantly appeared on the “local search” or “map” that many call Google My business. The industry colleague comes even and constantly when looking for “fruit baskets”. Why? The reason why the company appears more frequently is because they have the keyword fruit baskets in their company name.
address
The other way you can be seen through Google My business is when a potential customer is close to your business address and doing a search.
When you register your Google My Business account, you can choose where your business is and how far from your business address you help customers.
We’ve seen several companies abuse Google My business by typing in good keywords as company names and we do not think we’re sustainable in the long run. What do you think?
Chapter 2: Old reputable search engine optimisation
Another way to be seen on Google is through old reputable search engine optimisation, which can be either free or cost depending on whether you do it yourself or hand over work to an SEO company .
If you want to deepen your search engine optimisation skills, we highly recommend you to read our SEO engine optimisation guide . There we thoroughly review all areas of SEO – ranging from finding keywords to building links and more technical parts, among many more. In short, a complete guide on how to get to the top of the search engines.
Anyway, we also thought in this guide to share a few quick tips that you can use to improve your presence in Google …
Search optimisation that works
There are two essential parts to pick up when it’s time to review its webpage. The first is a so-called on-page optimisation. On-page is a common term in SEO context and for optimisation of web pages.
Examples of optimisation on page:
- Contentious and rewarding texts
- mobile Optimization
- Speed and navigation
- Internal link structure
- Compressed images
Different conditions
We often talk about how powerful a web page is and how all companies have different prerequisites for success on search engines. For us, it is about communicating this to our customers and creating the right expectations when we begin a collaboration.
One thing that determines how powerful a web page is how many external links point to the web page. It’s easy to see which external links you have through Search Console . Search Console is a free tool that Google has created. The tool is initially created for you as a web administrator to know or know if something is wrong on your web page. Here you can easily see how many external links pointing to your web page.
Chop down the competitors
To push out another business and get the opportunity to shine on Google’s top10 results, we need better content and text (on page) and more legitimate external links (off page) than the company that is located today. As simple as that.
Chapter 3: Google Indexing
Most people today understand the importance of appearing on Google and other search engines, which is probably the reason you are reading this guide. Surprisingly many people, however, have a bad eye on how the search engines work and how they index your website. In this chapter, therefore, we thought about how Google indexing works.
Aside from content and links, indexing is one of the most important and most basic parts of SEO. Unless Google and other search engines can index your site, it will also not appear in the search results.
What is indexing?
Before we tell you how Google indexes your and others’ websites, we first thought about finding out what indexing really is.
You have most likely come across the word index, which is a summary list of information with instructions on how to reach it. Google and the other search engines work in exactly the same way. They index and save a list of everything on the web, and then help you find it when you do a Google search.
This is how Google describes indexing:
“If the content of the site should be included in the results of your Custom Search Engine, it must first be included in Google’s index. Google’s index is similar to an index in a library that contains information about all books in the library. Instead of books, Google’s index contains a list of all web pages that Google knows. When Google visits your site, new and updated pages are identified and Google’s index is updated. “
How does Google index the internet?
Now that you know what indexing is, we thought about how Google actually used to index the internet.
As you most probably know, the internet is filled with incredible amounts of websites and content. In order to index websites and information of this size, both powerful and effective tools are required. In the search engines fall, these tools are so-called spiders.
Google spiders start indexing, or crawling a few web pages, and then indexing the pages that they link to. This process continues until Google has indexed a large portion of all content on the web. In other words, billions of documents scattered on the web.
If you’re interested in learning more about how Google indexes the web, you can read how they describe crawling and indexing themselves. You can also check out this informative video with Matt Cutts, former software engineer at Google:
How do I get Google to index my site?
Now that you have an incredible volume of sites and information being indexed, you’ll also have a greater understanding that Google may sometimes be indexing your site.
Therefore, we thought we’d tell you how to create the best prerequisites for your site to be indexed.
One way to get Google to index your webpage is to report it to their index . However, from experience, I know that this is not the fastest way most times. As you may remember, the spiders follow links to find new pages to index. The most effective way to get your site indexed, therefore, is often to link to your site from other sites. Provided that they are already in the index.
Find out if your site is indexed
By now, you’re probably interested in finding out if your site is indexed by Google. In fact, this is very easy to find out. Simply go to their search fields and search for site: domain name.com. You will then get all the pages in Google’s index:
As you can see, it also says how many pages are totally indexed above the results. In our case there are 287 pages indexed, which is reasonable.
If you do this and notice that no or only certain pages of your site are indexed, there are some things you can do …
No pages on the site are indexed
If you notice that Google failed to index a single page on your site, this will hopefully be due to an easy-to-fix issue. The most common reason why your site has not been indexed is that Google’s spiders have been prevented from visiting it.
In most cases, this is because your website contains a so-called “noindex robot tag”. To find out if this is the case with your site, you can easily open the source code on the page by right-clicking anywhere on the page and selecting “show source code”.
If you find a robot tag that contains noindex, this is most likely the problem. If, on the other hand, you can not find this tag, the next step is to check your robots.txt file.
You can find this by typing your domain name in the address bar of your browser, followed by /robots.txt. If you find a text string that contains “Disallow: /” this means you do not allow Google and other search engines to visit and index your site. Easily remove “/” then the problem should be resolved.
Some pages on the site are indexed
However, if you notice that only certain pages on your site are indexed, this may be due to a variety of issues. The most common problem is, however, that your site lacks a good structure. A great way to solve this is to create a sitemap, also called sitemap, in XML of the site.
A Sitemap helps Google Spiders to find your pages. A good tip is only to include your most important pages in the Sitemap. How to create a Sitemap depends on the type of CMS you are using.
If you have a website that is based on WordPress, you can easily create a sitemap through different plugins or plugins.
Other reasons that only certain parts of your site are indexed may be:
- Internal duplicate content
- Externally duplicated content
- Too little content
- Too few links
- Too many or bad links
- Too much advertising / pop-ups
Chapter 4: Google Adwords (Google Ads)
As we mentioned earlier in this guide, you can expose your business on Google for free or through different payment models.
Google Adwords is Google’s advertising platform that enables you as a business to analyze and bid on keywords that are important to your business. Then you only pay for the actual traffic generated from a click when a potential customer searches and ports on your web page.
Google Adwords works as an auction. Several companies can bid and bid on one and the same keyword. The position of your ad can commute slightly up and down. The position is determined depending on how relevant ads are and what you can think of paying for a click.
It usually shows up to four top ads and then three ads below the organic search result.
Google Shopping
Google Shopping is an ad format within Google Adwords that you can use to display in search results:
Google Shopping is a product flow where it requires from you as an advertiser to sell goods online. With Google Shopping, you can show products using an image, price, inventory, and a link to your webpage.
To advertise on Google Shopping, you also need to set up a product flow in Merchant Center .
Finally,
Congratulations! You have now reviewed our entire guide, which means that you should now have knowledge about how to make your website appear on Google both for free or through different payment models.
